Press Release:
U.S. Cellular® To Increase Community Use of
West
Knoxville Soccer Complex
KNOXVILLE,
TN (Nov. 10, 2009) – With an eye toward increasing public use of the company’s
soccer fields, U.S. Cellular® today announced that FC Alliance, a Knoxville-based
soccer club, will assume management of the U.S. Cellular® Soccer Complex in
West Knoxville.
In
partnership with Knox County Parks and Recreation, U.S. Cellular opened the
23-acre, tournament-quality soccer complex in the fall of 1999. Since then,
nearly 165,000 athletes have competed at the complex, and more than 330,000
spectators and vendors have attended games. The U.S. Cellular Soccer Complex
tournaments bring economic value to the area as families and fans travel to
Knoxville to stay in local hotels, shop in stores and eat in restaurants.
The
management change was approved by the County Commission on Sept. 28, and FC
Alliance officially assumed management of the fields on Nov. 1. Knox County
will continue to hold the ground lease, and FC Alliance will coordinate the
overall operation and scheduling for the fields. U.S. Cellular will maintain
oversight rights of the soccer complex.
“It’s
our goal that in partnering with FC Alliance, the U.S. Cellular Soccer Complex
will be used and enjoyed by many more people, which advances our mission: to
achieve the greatest possible community use of the soccer complex,” said Tom
Catani, regional vice president for U.S. Cellular. “We hope our soccer complex
continues to bring opportunities for instruction, exercise, competition and
fun.”
“We
plan to maximize community use of this premier soccer complex,” said Randy
Denton, president of the FC Alliance board of directors. “FC Alliance and other
organizations will continue to be able to use the complex. Many teams through
groups such as Knoxville Football Club, Knox County Middle Schools, AYSO and FC
Alliance play at the complex, and we hope that other soccer groups like
Knoxville Metro Soccer League also will enjoy using the fields in the future.”
FC
Alliance, a non-profit organization formed through the merger of the Impact and
Smoky Mountain Soccer Clubs in July 2008, strives to provide world-class
training, an understanding of diversity and a love for the game of soccer.
“The
goal for these fields is more play, improved ease of scheduling and greater use
by the community as a whole,” Denton said. “We plan to increase the level of
activity and get as many cleats on the ground as we can year-round.”
